Highlights:
1.This composition is on the Goddess Abhirami at Tirukkadaiyur
2.Tirukkadaiyur is the site associated with the legend of Markandeya where Shiva kicked Yama in order to save Markandeya. Markandeya, the son of MrkanDu
and marutvati was ordained to live only for 16 years. When the time for his departure arrived Yama came to retrieve him and he sought refuge in Shiva
who stopped Yama and used his leg to ward off the Lord of death and protect his devotee.
3.The God Shiva is known as AmrthaghaTEshvara since there is a legend that during the pralaya a small droplet of amrtha fell into a pot
and took the form of a linga and hence the name amrtaghaTeshvara - the Lord of the pot of nectar
4.It is considered that the vAma bhAga or the left side of Shiva is that of the Goddess and it is she whose grace saved Markandeya since it was the left
leg that was used to kick yama.
5.The usage of ViSuddhi chakra is noteworthy here in the sense of the symbolic and ritual. It is considered in Shakta literature that during the course of the
ascent of Kundalini the viSuddhi chakra symbolizes the transcendence over time. The composer seems to link the victory over death by Markandeya with this
transcendence over time.
